Maradona hits out at Lux omission (21 May 2006 01:42 GMT)

Diego Maradona has added his criticism of the decision to leave goalkeeper German Lux out of Argentina's World Cup squad.

On Thursday, after national team coach Jose Pekerman chose to take Roberto Abbondanzieri, Oscar Ustari and Leo Franco to Germany instead of Lux, Julio Grondona, the president of the country's Football Association (AFA), admitted he was shocked at the omission.

And now Maradona has hit out at the coach, saying: "There was a black hand in the final decision. It is serious. It is impossible that German Lux was released. He was fighting to be the Argentina's World Cup goalkeeper and he ended as the fourth choice."

Lux, the 23-year-old River Plate custodian, was reduced to tears after Pekerman told him the day before the squad was announced that he would not be among the names.

"I am with Lux until the death. It is unjust for a player who has had a football career like he has," Maradona added. "It is the coach who decides the players who will travel to Germany and so Pekerman is the one who has put himself at risk. Whether his decision is right will depend on the results that the team obtain in the World Cup."
