Villarreal defender Gonzalo Rodriguez is expected to be sidelined for seven months after tearing a right knee ligament on Saturday.
The Argentine international was hurt in the second half of Villarreal's 1-0 victory over Real Madrid during a preseason tournament in Cadiz.
Villarreal president Fernando Roig described the setback as "very tough" and said the team will seek to sign a replacement before the transfer deadline on Aug. 31.
Rodriguez has made 63 league appearances for Villarreal since his arrival from San Lorenzo in 2004.
