South American qualifying for the 2010 World Cup would start Sept. 8 under a schedule proposed to FIFA by the region's governing body.

The opening slate of games would have Bolivia at Uruguay, Brazil at Colombia, Chile at Argentina, Paraguay at Peru and Venezuela at Ecuador, the governing body CONMEBOL said Thursday.

Most regions will start qualifying after the World Cup qualifying draw, scheduled for Nov. 23 in Durban, South Africa. African qualifying will start on Oct. 13.

South America has four guaranteed berths spots, with the No. 5 team going to a playoff for another berth against the No. 4 nation in North and Central America and the Caribbean.
