Toluca hire Pekerman as manager (10 Jun 2007 10:46 GMT)
Jose Pekerman, who was coach of Argentina's national soccer team for the 2006 World Cup, was presented on Wednesday as the new coach of the Mexican soccer club Toluca, with a five-year contract.
"I feel very good about the fact we have been able to agree my entry to this institution. I know what Toluca is, and I feel it is an important step," Pekerman told a press conference at the team's Nemesio Diez Stadium.
Pekerman has never managed a professional club team and said that it made him feel very happy to join a club that has shown its international quality and grown a great deal in recent times.
Toluca is not a popular team in Mexico, but is the third most successful team in terms of domestic trophies: with eight domestic championship behind Guadalajara, which has 11; and America which has 10.
Pekerman said he would work to make sure Toluca has style as well as trophies.
"I have a vocation to give everything for this club, because of the people who made it, for the history it has, and to keep the level it has had in recent years," Pekerman said.
