Ayala retires from national team (24 Jul 2007 18:12 GMT)
Argentina captain Roberto Ayala retired from international soccer, two days after the Copa America final.
Ayala enjoyed a long, successful international career, playing in his first game for Argentina in 1994.
He played in 115 games for Argentina, the most in the country's history. He was on Argentina's 1998 and 2006 World Cup teams and played on the gold medal team in the 2004 Olympics.
Ayala said his decision hadd nothing to do with Copa America as it had been made earlier.
