South America backs Uruguay-Argentina bid for 2030 World Cup (5 Oct 2007 21:33 GMT)
Uruguay received the support of South American countries to co-host the 2030 World Cup soccer finals with Argentina, Uruguay's Soccer Association (AUF) president Jose Luis Corbo said.
Corbo, quoted on Tuesday by El Pais daily, said that on Friday at the South American Soccer Confederation Executive Committee's (Conmebol) meeting he officially proposed Uruguay as a host to the 2030 World Cup.
The Conmebol meeting was held at Paraguay's capital, Asuncion.
AUF's proposal aims to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first World Cup played in Uruguay in 1930, which was won by the host team.
"Fortunately, we obtained everybody's support, of all the national soccer presidents affiliated to the South American Confederation," Corbo said.
