Abbondanzieri wants to reach another World Cup (29 Dec 2007 19:30 GMT)

Roberto "Pato" Abbondanzieri is set to end his career at Getafe, possibly even extending his deal towards 2010 and beyond.

Argentina's number one is under contract until 2009, with club president Angel Torres explaining that the 35-year-old opted not to move elsewhere when given the chance.

"Pato had offers from three or four major teams," explained the Coliseum Alfonso Perez supremo. "But he gave up a lot of money and said 'no', because he wanted to retire here. He's here for this season and then another, and he'll extend his deal a further year if he wants to play in the World Cup."

Torres was full of praise for the 'keeper, who arrived at the start of last season from Boca Juniors, having spent a decade with the Buenos Aires club.

"He's impressive both as a person and a professional," he added. "He wants to reach another World Cup and he won't give up on that."
